KARACHI – Solar panel prices have witnessed a significant increased ahead of the upcoming federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27. The recent spike in solar panel prices may serve a dent to ongoing spree of shifting of households to solar system. Solar Panels Open Market Rates Reports said the price of each solar plate has risen by Rs7,000 to Rs9,000. The cost of a 585-watt panel has climbed from Rs18,000 to Rs27,000. Similarly, the price of a 645-watt panel has increased from Rs22,000 to Rs31,200, while a 720-watt panel now costs Rs33,500 compared to the earlier price of Rs25,000. Traders also expect a possible increase in inverter prices. Budget 2026-27 Proposal Earlier, the federal government is considering increasing the tax on solar panels in the upcoming Budget 2026-27, a move that could lead to higher prices of solar systems in the country. If approved, the proposed increase is expected to make solar panels more expensive for consumers at a time when demand for solar energy is already rising rapidly. Many households and businesses in Pakistan have been shifting towards solar systems in an effort to reduce electricity costs amid increasing power tariffs. While the government has also been promoting renewable energy and solar adoption, the suggested tax hike may create additional financial pressure on consumers and could slow down the pace of solarization in the country. Reports said the government is likely to increase the General Sales Tax (GST) on solar panels from existing 10 percent to 18% in upcoming budget 2026-27.
