Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

KARACHI – Senior Pakistani film and television actress Meera has expressed strong resentment over being labelled “psycho” during a recent social media interaction that has gone viral. In a circulating video, the actress was interviewed by an individual who referred to her character in the film Psycho and made remarks suggesting she had previously been “psycho” and had not moved beyond the role. Responding sharply, Meera objected to the comments and said that if respect was not given, she also received significant respect in India. She added that being repeatedly labelled in such a manner was inappropriate and disrespectful. The actress further clarified that her role in Psycho was one of the most challenging performances of her career, and she had worked hard to portray the character. Meera said she had initially expected appreciation and recognition for both herself and director Shaan Shahid for making a difficult psychological film in Pakistan. She added that the project was meant to highlight serious emotional and psychological themes. Calling the film a portrayal of depression-related issues, she said audiences could learn from her character if they chose to understand the message behind the story. It may be mentioned here that Psycho, produced under the banner of a local private TV, was released on Eid-ul-Azha. The cast includes Shaan Shahid, Sonya Hussyn, Meera, Shabbir Jan and others. Is this Momina Iqbal smoking on her big day in viral video?
