Spain secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals. The European champions controlled much of the contest and took the lead in the 36th minute through Mikel Oyarzabal. Marc Cucurella delivered a low cross from the left, allowing the forward to guide a first-time finish into the corner for his third goal of the tournament. Spain had threatened throughout the opening half. Lamine Yamal tested the Austrian defence in the opening minute, while Cucurella had an earlier effort ruled out after the referee judged there had been a foul on goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Alex Baena also came close before halftime when his free-kick struck the crossbar. Austria created limited opportunities during the match. Michael Gregoritsch was unable to connect with a cross from Marcel Sabitzer before the break, while substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over shortly after coming on in the second half. Spain doubled their advantage when Baena delivered another cross from the left and Pedro Porro headed home to score his first international goal. After David Alaba cleared a Yamal effort off the goal line, Spain added a third as Oyarzabal completed his brace by sliding in another cross from Cucurella. The victory sends Spain into the quarter-finals, where they will face Portugal in Dallas on 6 July following Portugal’s win over Croatia.
