An aircraft carrying a group of skydivers crashed near the eastern French town of Tomblaine on Sunday, killing all 11 people aboard in one of the country’s deadliest accidents involving a small plane. According to local authorities, the victims included five skydiving instructors, five trainees, and the pilot. Yves Seguy, prefect of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, confirmed the fatalities during a press briefing, adding that no people on the ground were harmed in the incident. The aircraft, which was registered in Germany, went down in a grassy area close to the runway at Nancy-Essey Airport. The crash site was located near residential neighbourhoods and nearby roads, according to local media reports. Officials have not yet determined what caused the accident. Emergency responders, including medical and psychological support teams, were deployed to assist family members of the victims who were present at the airfield, along with witnesses affected by the tragedy. Authorities have launched a technical investigation into the crash, with Nancy deputy prosecutor Amaury Lacote confirming that inquiries are underway. Police also urged the public through the social media platform X to stay away from the area surrounding the airport to ensure emergency teams could operate without obstruction.
