PRESIDENT Donald Trump’s proposal to link a potential Iran deal with the en masse signing of the Abraham Accords by Muslim countries is neither prudent diplomacy nor a constructive pathway to peace. The issue of an Iran deal and the question of recognition of Israel by Muslim-majority countries are two entirely separate matters and must not be tied together. A diplomatic agreement with Iran should stand on its own merits. If Washington seeks regional stability and the prevention of further conflict in the Middle East, then negotiations with Tehran must remain focused on de-escalation. To burden these talks with demands upon other independent nations is both inappropriate and counterproductive. . The stance of many Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan has remained consistent for decades. These nations have repeatedly stated that normalization of relations with Israel can only come through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. This position is rooted not only in diplomatic principles but also in overwhelming public sentiment across the Muslim world. Indeed, resentment against Israel has deepened sharply in recent times because of the continued suffering of the Palestinian people. Images of destruction, civilian deaths, displacement and ongoing military operations in Gaza and the occupied territories have generated profound anger across Muslim societies. There remains no cessation of Israeli hostilities, nor any visible progress toward a just and durable settlement of the Palestinian issue. Under such circumstances, expecting Muslim governments to suddenly embrace normalization with Israel ignores the political realities within their own societies. Governments in these countries cannot afford to disregard the aspirations and emotions of their peoples.
