Iran Says US Must Honor Commitments for Peace Deal to Hold
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
Mohammad Mokhbar, an adviser and aide to Iran’s supreme leader, has said Iran will not accept any agreement with the United States that exists only on paper, insisting Washington must honour its commitments. In a post on X, he said the US responds best to economic pressure and understands negotiations through the lens of financial costs and benefits. Mokhbar warned that if any agreement is not properly implemented, energy supplies from the Middle East could face disruption. “Our negotiating team will accept nothing less than complete implementation of commitments and the protection of the nation’s rights,” he said, adding that Iran would also remember those who lost their lives during the conflict. Meanwhile, Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said the country’s energy sector would serve as a major indicator of whether any future peace agreement with the US is genuinely upheld by Western countries. According to the oil ministry’s news agency Shana, he said Iran’s oil industry could provide major opportunities for international investors in the post-agreement period, with hundreds of ready-to-launch investment projects as well as technical and operational partnership deals prepared for signing.
