ISLAMABAD – Islamabad District Health Office (DHO) on Wednesday issued a heatwave advisory, urging citizens to take precautionary measures as temperatures are expected to rise significantly during the summer months. The extreme heat conditions are likely between May and July due to the impact of climate change and global warming, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and mortality, said the advisory. The authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and limit outdoor activities during peak hours. Health officials warned that heatstroke is a serious medical emergency in which the body loses its ability to regulate temperature. The condition can cause body temperature to rise rapidly above 106°F within 10 to 15 minutes and may lead to permanent disability or death if not treated promptly. The advisory outlines key symptoms of heatstroke, including high body temperature, headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, slurred speech, hallucinations, and either excessive sweating or absence of sweating. The vulnerable groups include infants, the elderly, outdoor workers, and athletes, particularly those engaged in strenuous physical activity in hot conditions. The citizens have been advised to stay hydrated, wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing, use umbrellas or hats, and remain in shaded or cool areas. Outdoor physical activity is recommended only during early morning hours to reduce exposure to extreme heat. In case of suspected heatstroke, authorities stressed immediate action, including moving the patient to a cool place, removing excess clothing, and initiating cooling measures such as applying cold packs to the neck, armpits, and groin, spraying water on the body, and using fans.
