Series win, reality check
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
PAKISTAN’S four-wicket victory over Australia in the third and final one-day international at Lahore has been celebrated as a series win, giving the home side a 2-1 triumph. On paper, the result looks impressive. However, a closer look raises questions about the real significance of this series win. Australia did not field their full-strength team in Pakistan. Key players were missing, leaving the side noticeably weakened. Top cricketing nations now increasingly treat Pakistan as a secondary opponent, sending understrength teams while prioritizing tours elsewhere. The series win, therefore, should not be a reason for unbridled jubilation. In fact, Pakistan’s own performance highlights vulnerabilities. In the third one day international, the team struggled at 112-6 before Shadab and Samad combined for an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership to seal the victory. If our national side had difficulty chasing a modest total against an understrength Australian team, it exposes gaps in depth, temperament and consistency that merit serious attention. It is, of course, heartening that new talent is being introduced into the national setup. Yet, celebrating series wins against second-string opponents cannot be a substitute for genuine progress. Pakistan cricket faces the risk of sliding into the same decline witnessed in hockey and squash unless decisive reforms are undertaken. The focus must be on nurturing talent at the grassroots level. Merit must remain the guiding principle. Developing a robust pipeline of players, improving domestic competitions and creating better training structures are essential. Only by strengthening the foundations of the game can Pakistan produce cricketers capable of consistently competing against the world’s best, even when full-strength teams tour here. The broader challenge is structural: building a system that consistently produces competitive teams and keeps the game vibrant at every level. Without this, victories over understrength opponents
