Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on Sunday (today) to examine crescent sighting reports for Zilhaj, a process that will determine the date of Eidul Azha. Following verification of testimonies, authorities will formally determine the date for the beginning of Zilhaj and Eidul Azha. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Religious Affairs said the meeting would take place at the Pakistan Meteorological Department headquarters in Karachi under the chairmanship of Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, head of the top moon sighting committee. At the same time, zonal and district moon-sighting committees across the country will hold separate sessions at their respective locations to evaluate local reports before sending them to the central body for final assessment. After reviewing all evidence and testimonies, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad will make the official announcement regarding moon sighting and the commencement of Zilhaj. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has already indicated a strong likelihood of the crescent being visible today, sparking anticipation ahead of the committee’s decision. If the moon is sighted as forecast, Eidul Azha in Pakistan is expected to be observed on May 27. However, the final declaration will depend on the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s verification of reports received nationwide.
