Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani government announced a two-day public holiday across Pakistan in observance of Ashura, with the Cabinet Division issuing an official notification confirming that June 25 and June 26 will be observed as public holidays. The holidays will apply to all federal government offices and institutions. Provincial governments are also expected to implement necessary arrangements within their respective jurisdictions. As a result, government offices, educational institutions, and several public and semi-government organizations will remain closed during the two-day period. Authorities finalized extensive security plans to ensure peaceful observance of Ashura across the country. In Islamabad, the administration has imposed a ban on pillion riding (double riding on motorcycles) as part of measures aimed at maintaining law and order and safeguarding participants in processions and religious gatherings. Officials said the restriction is intended to prevent any untoward incidents and reduce potential security threats during the sensitive period. Additional security personnel will be deployed along procession routes, at Imambargahs, and other key locations identified as sensitive. Special surveillance and monitoring arrangements are also being put in place, with security agencies tasked with maintaining continuous oversight of both major and smaller processions. Authorities say these measures are designed to provide a safe and secure environment for mourners and the general public. Mobile phone networks are likely to remain operational during Ashura. However, they clarified that a final decision on the matter has yet to be announced. Ashura 2026: Sindh announces holidays on June 25 and 26
