Soft power case: A case study of East Asia
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
In today’s global economy, a nation’s power is no longer defined solely by military strength or economic output. Increasingly, influence is shaped by how attractive and trusted a country is on the world stage. Coined by Joseph Nye, “soft power” refers to the influence and appeal of a country based on culture, values, education, diplomacy, and international relations. It is a powerful tool that can boost trade, attract visitors and investors, build national brands, and enhance global competitiveness. Through these means, states shape international perceptions and create opportunities for economic growth and influence. In East Asia, China provides a clear example of soft power as a strategic instrument. It has invested in global influence through initiatives such as Confucius Institutes, which promote Chinese language learning and cultural awareness through education programs, cultural events, scholarships, and academic collaborations. Alongside this, the Belt and Road Initia-tive (BRI), though primarily viewed as an infrastructure project, also functions as a tool of international engagement and soft power by strengthening economic ties through investment in transportation networks, ports, and railways across multiple regions. Japan, in contrast, has focused more on cultural appeal and global branding through enter-tainment and media. Its “Cool Japan” strategy promotes Japanese popular culture, including anime, manga, video games, fashion, cuisine, and design. The global popularity of these cultural products has strengthened Japan’s international image and boosted tourism, as visitors seek to experience cultural settings they previously encountered through media and popular culture. South Korea offers one of the strongest case studies of soft power as an economic driver in the 21st century. The “Hallyu” or Korean Wave represents the global spread of South Korean pop music, dramas, films, fashion, and beauty products. Digital technology, streaming platforms, and socia
