Five-try Leinster rout Bulls to retain URC title

For the Irish province, the 36-7 victory goes some way to atoning for the disappointment of missing out on a fifth European Champions Cup crown when they lost to Bordeaux-Begles in the decider of that competition in Bilbao last month. Leinster dominated the opening period and led 22-0 at the interval thanks to tries from Tommy O'Brien, Rieko Ioane and Jack Conan as the Pretoria side paid the penalty for an error-strewn first-half performance which saw them twice reduced to 14 men for deliberate knock-on offences. Sam Prendergast and Harry Byrne added further scores after the break, with Canan Moodie crossing for Bulls, who found themselves on the wrong end of two debatable decisions by the officials as they crossed the line twice more for tries that were ruled out. Leinster have now won the league 10 times in its various guises - the first to defend the URC crown since its 2021 rebrand - while the Bulls suffered disappointment yet again with a fourth defeat in the past five URC finals. The Bulls were reduced to 14 within the first two minutes when centre Moodie was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on which prevented a line-break. Four minutes later O'Brien went over for Leinster's first try when he pounced on a poor pass from Handre Pollard on halfway by kicking the loose ball, collecting it 30 metres out and sprinting clear to score under the posts. The second touchdown was not long in coming as Ioane stepped inside Bulls defender Kurt-Lee Arendse and dived over in the corner after Jamison Gibson-Park showed smart hands and Hugo Keenan went on a surging run and shrugged off a couple of attempted challenges, before feeding the ball left to the centre. Some sterling defensive work from the South African side on their line helped them repel further attacking threats from Leo Cullen's charges, but there was more woe for the visitors when Willie le Roux was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on as Leinster bore down on their opponents' line. The home side were further rewarded for their relentless pressure when Conan picked up and barged over from close range for try number three. The visitors' indiscipline and lack of composure continued to cost them as Prendergast extended the lead further when he knocked over a penalty from in front of the posts after the Bulls had failed to release in the tackle. The Bulls were controversially denied a try when Harold Vorster appeared to ground the ball, but after consultation with the television match official [TMO] referee Andrea Piardi ruled out the score. It was the turn of Leinster to play with 14 men for 10 minutes when James Lowe received a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on infringement on his final appearance for the province. Joe McCarthy executed an excellent turnover on the line to prevent a seemingly certain score, but soon after the hour mark the Bulls were not to be denied as they finally breached the holders' defences as Moodie accepted an offload and stretched out to score, with Pollard adding the extras. Any potential comeback hopes were ended, however, when Ruan Mortje barged over after the ball went quickly through the Bulls hands, but the referee adjudged Moodie had passed forward in the build-up after involving the TMO. Replacement Byrne completed the scoring in the final minutes when he rumbled over between the sticks and converted his own try.
