LAHORE – The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province in view of security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram, restricting various activities to maintain law and order and ensure religious harmony. According to the Home Department spokesperson, the restrictions will remain in place from 1st to 10th Muharram throughout Punjab. Under the imposed measures, no new innovation or alteration will be allowed in Muharram processions and religious gatherings. The display of any kind of weapons or explosive materials in public places without permission from the competent authority has been strictly prohibited. The government has also banned provocative slogans, gestures, or actions that may hurt religious sentiments, beliefs, or sectarian harmony. Any attempt to promote sectarian or ethnic hatred through social media or other platforms will face strict legal action under Section 144. The order further restricts the construction of bunkers on rooftops of houses or buildings located along procession routes. Accumulation of stones, bricks, bottles, or any other objects on rooftops or shop fronts along these routes has also been prohibited. Spectator presence on rooftops and shop fronts along procession routes has been restricted to ensure security. However, elderly citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel are exempted where applicable. A complete ban on pillion riding will be enforced across Punjab on 9th and 10th Muharram, while other restrictions related to public movement will remain effective from 1st to 10th Muharram.
