Toward greater cooperation

Pakistan Observer · May 26, 2026, 12:50 AM

Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

THE signing of agreements and memorandums of understanding worth more than $7 billion between Pakistani and Chinese companies during Pakistan-China Business Conference in Hangzhou marks an encouraging beginning to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s latest visit to China. Covering sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, agriculture and battery energy storage systems, these agreements reflect the expanding scope of economic cooperation between the two iron brothers and once again underline the strategic importance both countries attach to their partnership. Given the longstanding bonds of trust and close relationship between Pakistan and China, every high-level interaction between the two sides generates optimism and is viewed with great anticipation by the people of both countries. Over the years, this relationship has evolved beyond diplomacy into a comprehensive partnership rooted in mutual support, economic cooperation and shared regional interests. It is therefore reassuring to see both sides continuing efforts to broaden cooperation into new and emerging sectors. At the same time, while the signing of agreements and MoUs is undoubtedly welcome, there is also a genuine expectation that these understandings must now translate into tangible progress on the ground. Pakistan and China have signed several agreements in the past as well, many of which have produced visible results, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor framework. However, the real success of the latest understandings will depend on timely implementation and the removal of bureaucratic obstacles that often slow down investment and project execution. Encouragingly, there is a clear commitment at the leadership level on both sides to further strengthen and diversify this relationship. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while addressing the conference, highlighted immense opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, mining, information technology and special economic zones.
