KARACHI – Sindh government announced the launch of the Pink Taxi Scheme for women, marking another major initiative aimed at improving women’s mobility and economic empowerment across the province. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi Scheme will include dedicated Pink Taxis for women. He added that the government would soon unveil the full details of the EV taxi project. The minister also revealed that authorities have directed traffic officials to take action against men found riding scooters allocated under the Pink Scooty Scheme, following complaints that some women’s brothers were using the vehicles instead of the registered beneficiaries. He defended the Pink Scooty initiative against criticism, saying the scheme has encouraged women to obtain driving licenses. He noted that when the program was launched, only 150 women held valid driving licenses, whereas 25,000 women have now applied. He described the initiative as a “revolution” for Sindh, adding that the government remains committed to expanding the program and providing scooters to women as more become licensed drivers. Highlighting the province’s broader transport reforms, the minister said Sindh became the first province in Pakistan to introduce electric buses, calling the EV Taxi Scheme the next step in modernizing public transport. Memon further praised performance of Sindh Revenue Board (SRB), claiming it has outperformed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in tax collection growth. According to him, the SRB recorded 24% growth, compared with the FBR’s 10% growth, describing it as evidence of Sindh’s strong revenue performance.
