Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued detailed guidelines to tackle the heatwave threat across Punjab as temperatures are expected to rise sharply during Eid-ul-Azha holidays. Director General PDMA Umar Javed has suggested that relevant departments stay on high alert and ensure emergency measures are in place to protect the public. Temperatures in Punjab this month could remain 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal levels, with major cities, plains and particularly southern districts likely to face extreme heat conditions. District administrations have been instructed to provide cold drinking water, shaded areas and other relief facilities at public places. Authorities have also been told to launch awareness campaigns through helpline services, mosque announcements, and print, electronic and social media to educate citizens about heatwave risks and safety measures. Farmers are being informed about the possible impact of rising temperatures on crops, while local government departments have been directed to ensure water supply at public gathering points. The PDMA advised the display of awareness banners at bus terminals and railway stations, while veterinary care centres have been instructed to remain operational round the clock with adequate clean water arrangements in animal markets. The health department has been directed to keep heatwave response counters active in hospitals, ensure availability of medicines, operate mobile health units and establish medical camps where needed. The PDMA advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak heat hours, keep themselves hydrated and cover their heads when stepping into direct sunlight. Special precautions have been urged for children, elderly people and patients, especially those suffering from heart conditions. Officials added that wearing light-coloured clothing and following precautionary measures could significantly reduce the risks associated with extreme heat. Punjab focuses on Eidg
