ISLAMABAD – Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Munib Akhtar, has been sworn in as the Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan during the temporary absence of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who is currently out of the country. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Supreme Court Branch Registry in Karachi in a simple and dignified manner. Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui administered the oath. As per constitutional and judicial convention, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court assumes the responsibilities of the Chief Justice when the office is vacant or the incumbent is unavailable. In line with this practice, Justice Munib Akhtar will perform the duties of Acting Chief Justice until Chief Justice Yahya Afridi returns. The ceremony was attended by judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, judges of the Federal Constitutional Court, senior judicial officers, and court officials. Members of the Supreme Court staff were also present. The proceedings of the oath-taking ceremony were formally conducted by the Registrar of the Supreme Court.
