Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
US President Donald Trump has reiterated his pledge to prevent Iran from retaining highly enriched uranium for its nuclear activities, warning that Washington is prepared to take strong action if necessary. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said the United States would ensure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon. “We are going to make sure they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon, or we will have to take very serious measures,” Trump said, adding that the US would support efforts to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state. When asked whether Iran would be allowed to keep its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, Trump responded that the material would not remain in Tehran’s possession. He said the US intended to seize the uranium and could destroy it afterwards, stressing that Washington would not permit Iran to maintain control over it. Earlier media reports had claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, rejected the possibility of transferring the uranium abroad. However, a senior Iranian official dismissed those reports, describing them as “propaganda by opponents of the agreement.” The official said Iran’s stance on enriched uranium has remained unchanged and that Tehran plans to dilute the nuclear material domestically rather than send it out of the country. According to the official, the issue will be addressed in the next phase of negotiations. Iran asserts control over Strait of Hormuz with new maritime zone
