Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

The Karachi Traffic Police on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive traffic management plan for the port city ahead of Muharram processions. According to an official statement, M. A. Jinnah Road will remain closed between Guru Mandir and Tower as a precautionary security measure. The main Muharram procession during these three days is scheduled to begin from Nishtar Park and conclude at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah, following its traditional route. Authorities advised commuters travelling from Nazimabad to use Lasbela Chowk and pass through the Garden area to access Nishtar Road. Citizens coming from Liaquatabad have been instructed to take a left turn at Teen Hatti and continue via Martin Road. Traffic officials further stated that the road connecting Liaquatabad and Guru Mandir will remain inaccessible between 8:30 am and 9:30 am on 9th Muharram. Motorists heading from Hasan Square towards Peoples Chowrangi have been recommended alternative routes including Kashmir Road, Jail Flyover, Teen Hatti, and Nishtar Road to avoid disruptions. Similarly, vehicles moving from Shahrah-e-Faisal towards Numaish Chowrangi will be redirected from Society Light Signal towards Kashmir Road. Traffic moving from Central Jail Gate on Jamshed Road towards M.A. Jinnah Road near Guru Mandir has been advised to use Bahadur Yar Jung Road through Soldier Bazar. Muharram is considered one of Islam’s four sacred months, with Ashura observed on the 10th day in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali and his companions during the historic Battle of Karbala. Across Pakistan, mourners mark the occasion through religious gatherings, majalis, and processions, where scholars deliver sermons commemorating the sacrifices of Karbala.
