Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

The Sindh government has revised its Eid-ul-Azha 2026 holiday schedule, cutting the break from four days to three and declaring May 26 to May 28 as public holidays, while May 29 will be observed as work-from-home. According to an official corrigendum, May 26, 27 and 28, 2026 — corresponding to 9th, 10th and 11th Zil Hajj 1447 AH — will be observed as public holidays across the province. The notification applies to all provincial government departments, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, public corporations, and local councils operating under the Sindh government. However, authorities clarified that essential services and offices involved in preparing the provincial budget for the financial year 2026–27 will remain operational and exempt from the holiday notification. The updated schedule replaces an earlier notification that had announced Eid holidays from May 26 to May 29, effectively reducing the break to three official holidays. With this revision, Sindh’s Eid-ul-Azha holidays now align with the federal government’s previously announced schedule of May 26 to 28. Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the faith of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who demonstrated his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah before the act was divinely replaced with a ram. The festival is observed through special prayers, family gatherings, and acts of charity, including the ritual sacrifice of animals, with meat distributed among relatives, friends, and those in need.
