Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

RIYADH – Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Upon his arrival at King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia, Mohsin Naqvi was received by Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif. During the visit, the two sides are expected to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in internal security, efforts to combat narcotics trafficking, and enhanced institutional coordination between the interior ministries of the two countries. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share longstanding strategic relations and have continued to expand cooperation in political, economic, security and defence sectors through regular high-level engagements. In September 2025, the two countries signed a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. The agreement provides for enhanced defence cooperation and commits both countries to close coordination in response to security challenges. Earlier this year, Pakistan also deployed Pakistan Air Force fighter and support aircraft to Saudi Arabia under the bilateral defence framework to strengthen joint military coordination and operational readiness. In addition, 200 personnel from Pakistan’s Federal Constabulary Special Diplomatic Protection Unit are scheduled to receive specialised training in Saudi Arabia as part of ongoing security cooperation. Saudi Arabia has remained one of Pakistan’s closest strategic and economic partners, extending financial assistance and investment support during periods of economic difficulty while maintaining extensive collaboration in defence and security affairs.
