Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

LAHORE – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has dismissed social media reports claiming that senior party leader Dr Yasmin Rashid has died while in custody, describing the information as false and baseless. In a statement, the party said Dr Yasmin Rashid is alive and remains incarcerated at Kot Lakhpat Jail, where she is serving a sentence in connection with the May 9 cases. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram also rejected the circulating reports in a social media post, stating that Dr Yasmin Rashid is alive and continues to face imprisonment after standing with former prime minister Imran Khan. He urged party workers and the public not to believe or spread unverified information regarding her condition. The party reiterated that all reports claiming her death have no basis in fact and appealed to the public to ignore rumours circulating online. According to the PTI statement, jail authorities have confirmed that both Dr Yasmin Rashid and fellow PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry are unwell. The party said their health condition is known to both prison officials and the court. The clarification came after reports circulated on social media alleging that Dr Yasmin Rashid’s health had suddenly deteriorated in Kot Lakhpat Jail, that she had been shifted to a hospital, and that she had died during treatment. PTI has categorically denied those claims.
