Who is Amjad Hussain, PPP’s Nominee for GB Chief Minister?
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s nominee for the lucrative post of Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister, Advocate Amjad Hussain, has been serving as party president since 2016. He has recently secured victory from constituency GBA-I in the latest elections. A senior lawyer by profession, he is widely known for his understanding of constitutional and legal matters concerning GB. Amjad previously served as a member of the GB Assembly from 2020 to 2025 and was part of the GB Council between 2009 and 2014. During the 2020 regional elections, Hussain made history by contesting from two constituencies — GBA-I Gilgit and GBA-IV Nagar — becoming the only politician in the region to do so. He won both seats but later vacated the Nagar seat. From 2020 to 2023, he served as opposition leader in the GB Assembly during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government headed by Khalid Khurshid. He also played a leading role in introducing the Gilgit-Baltistan Land Reforms Act, passed in 2025, aimed at granting land ownership rights to residents. Hussain launched the political campaigns Haq-e-Hukumat (Right to Rule) and Haq-e-Malkiat (Right to Ownership) in 2016, initiatives that were later incorporated into the PPP’s election manifesto. He has consistently advocated for granting provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan. Bilawal Picks Amjad Hussain for Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Post
