Pakistan, China urge action on long-pending UN resolutions

NEW YORK – Pakistan and China jointly convened an informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss ways of strengthening the implementation of Security Council resolutions and enhancing the effectiveness of the UN’s decision-making process. The meeting brought together council members and other UN representatives to exchange views on ensuring that Security Council resolutions are implemented in a consistent, comprehensive and timely manner. Senior UN officials and policy experts briefed participants on challenges facing the implementation of council decisions. Speakers stressed that the credibility and effectiveness of the Security Council depend largely on the successful execution of its resolutions. They highlighted the importance of realistic mandates, clear implementation strategies, adequate resources, regular monitoring and strong political commitment to translate council decisions into meaningful action on the ground. Speaking at the meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said Security Council resolutions carry legal obligations under the UN Charter and should be implemented without discrimination. He noted that delays or failures in implementing resolutions undermine the authority of the Security Council, prolong conflicts and contribute to human suffering in various regions of the world. The ambassador pointed to unresolved international disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, and said the lack of implementation of relevant UN resolutions has hindered efforts to achieve lasting peace and justice. Pakistan also presented a number of proposals aimed at improving implementation mechanisms. These included conducting regular reviews of resolutions that remain unimplemented or only partially implemented, strengthening follow-up procedures and improving coordination between UN peace operations and Security Council decisions.
