Key takeaways

  • Now that its R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck models are showing up on American roads, Rivian is turning its sights to a new SUV called R2, which is smaller and more affordable.
  • For 2027, all R2s will ship as either the Premium trim with a 450-horsepower all-wheel drive setup or the Performance trim with 656 horsepower.
  • Expert Tip: The R2 isn't as capable of an off-roader as the R1S, so if EV overlanding is your dream, you might want to look at Rivian's larger SUV.

Why this matters: an automotive development that could shape industry direction or buying decisions.

Now that its R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck models are showing up on American roads, Rivian is turning its sights to a new SUV called R2, which is smaller and more affordable. The R2 is sized similarly to compact gas-powered crossovers such as the BMW X3 and the Hyundai Tucson, but its starting price and electric powertrain put it in the same segment as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y.

For 2027, all R2s will ship as either the Premium trim with a 450-horsepower all-wheel drive setup or the Performance trim with 656 horsepower. (A single-motor, rear-wheel drive powertrain configuration will join the lineup next year.) An 87.9-kWh battery pack is said to deliver up to 330 miles of driving range. The interior of the SUV follows the design theme set by the larger Rivian models and features the same 15.6-inch center infotainment display. Two rows of seats accommodate up to five riders with a generously sized rear cargo area and a frunk for extra storage.
