Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, warning that rising hostilities are exposing the fragility of the current ceasefire environment and increasing the risk of wider regional escalation. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the recent surge in violence underscores the dangers of a weakened ceasefire and the potentially severe consequences of renewed conflict. He said the continued cycle of instability must come to an end in the interest of regional and global peace, security, and prosperity. The envoy noted that the breakdown of diplomatic engagement and escalation of hostilities have also complicated efforts on the Iran nuclear issue, pushing relevant parties further apart and affecting the verification role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Reaffirming Pakistan’s position, he said all outstanding disputes, including the Iran nuclear matter, should be resolved through peaceful means, sustained dialogue, and diplomatic engagement in accordance with the rights and responsibilities of all sides. He added that Pakistan has been actively engaged with regional and international partners to support de-escalation efforts, encourage a ceasefire, and facilitate a return to negotiations. According to him, Islamabad has maintained continuous consultations with countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, Qatar, and China to promote stability and reduce tensions. He described Pakistan’s efforts as aimed at halting the momentum of conflict, saving lives, and preserving space for diplomacy. Calling for restraint as diplomatic efforts continue, the envoy urged all sides to exercise patience and allow negotiations a fair chance, stressing that sustained dialogue remains the most viable path to lasting peace in the region.
