EUROPE’S record-breaking heatwave is yet another stark reminder that climate change is a present-day reality with devastating consequences. From France and Britain to Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Serbia, millions of people are enduring unprecedented temperatures that have disrupted daily life, strained healthcare systems and claimed dozens of lives. The continent, which scientists describe as the world’s fastest-warming region, is now experiencing the harsh consequences of a warming planet. The scale of the crisis is alarming. Temperatures have climbed to nearly 41 degrees Celsius in parts of France, while Italy is expected to record its first 40°C readings of the summer. The intense heat has already been linked to at least 55 deaths in France, overwhelmed hospitals with emergency cases and forced authorities to impose extraordinary measures, including bans on public alcohol consumption and the cancellation of major public events. In Germany, extreme heat caused motorway surfaces to crack open, while schools in the Netherlands closed under rare “code red” warnings. The effects extend far beyond inconvenience; they pose a direct threat to public health, infrastructure, agriculture and economic activity. Scientists have been unequivocal in their assessment. According to the World Weather Attribution group, this heatwave would have been virtually impossible without human-induced climate change. .
