U.S. Central Command also denied claims by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that they had struck the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a separate air base in the region. Comment | U.S.-Iran negotiations, still a road to nowhere “Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets,” U.S. CENTCOM said in a statement. “Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart en route, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by US and Bahrain air defense forces.” The U.S. military also shot down three attack drones that had been launched by Iran “toward civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters,” CENTCOM said. It also said the strikes had targeted an “Iranian military ground control station” on the island, adding that no U.S. personnel were injured. Also Read | Iran’s inflation hits World War II levels, deepening economic pain Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps said that they have attacked the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters and an airbase and helicopters in a regional country using missiles and drones, Iranian media reported on Wednesday (June 3, 2026), in response to what the IRGC described as a U.S. attack on an a communications tower south of Qeshm Island. IRGC navy also targeted a vessel it identified as Panaya with missiles in response to what it said was a U.S. attack on an Iranian tanker near the Strait of Hormuz with a projectile that damaged the engine room, Iranian media reported. CENTCOM has, however, denied these attacks. For nearly half a century, relations between Iran and the United States have oscillated between overt hostility and crisis management. Periods of confrontation were punctuated by brief diplomatic openings, only to be followed by renewed distrust and, more recently, war and devastation. In this context the current move towards a memorandum that could lead to an indefinite ceasefire and buy time to address the thornier issues bedevilling their relationship appears to be a significant step. However, even agreeing on a framework to enter into substantive negotiations has been far more difficult than anticipated thanks to vastly different expectations of the two sides. Several obstacles stand in the way of transforming the proposed U.S.-Iran memorandum even if it is signed into a lasting peace agreement The United States announced sanctions on Iran’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), accusing it of enabling the Iranian government and blacklisted State institutions to circumvent Western sanctions. The new sanctions follow a Reuters investigation published on May 1, which showed how Nobitex had become a central node in a parallel financial system used to process hundreds of millions of dollars for Iran’s central bank and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The report also revealed how Nobitex continued operating even after the government-imposed internet shutdown, processing millions of dollars of transactions. “While Iran’s economy is in free fall, the regime has chosen to co-opt digital asset technologies for its own corrupt agenda, including evading sanctions and transferring wealth out of the country,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. U.S. sanctions Iran's largest crypto exchange, Nobitex, for facilitating transactions linked to the IRGC amid internet shutdowns. U.S. forces on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) fired a missile at a ship that was attempting to sail toward an Iranian port in violation of an American blockade, disabling the vessel, the U.S. military said.
