As the electric 3-row SUV enters its second year on the market, we hope more people can experience how the pros of an electric 3-row SUV usually outweigh any perceived cons, whether or not buyers spring for the new special-edition model. The 2027 Ioniq 9 competes with other 3-row EVs including the Kia EV9 and, in a higher price class, the Rivian R1S. The big news this year is the 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 AWD Performance Calligraphy Black Ink, which is a lot of words to say completely loaded and blacked out. Here's what you need to know: Like Limited and Calligraphy models, the 2027 Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink has a dual-motor AWD system good for 422 hp. So if it's safe, go ahead, make that pass. Expected driving range of 311 miles The Calligraphy Black Ink replaces last year's Calligraphy Design top model. In photos, the black aluminum trim appears to be the type of subtle trim that may reward a closer look but blend in most of the time Six-passenger layout with second-row captain's chairs Heated third-row seats and a suede-like headliner A 2026 MotorTrend SUV of the Year finalist, the Ioniq 9 is one of the best 3-row SUVs at any price. That's because it's so well-rounded, offering thoughtful interior touches and a refined driving experience. Even if the futuristic design isn't for you (we happen to like it), there's lots to love here. Every model has at least 300 miles of range and the everyday convenience that comes with owning an electric car. If you're fortunate enough to have home charging, "refueling" is as simple as plugging in your car in the comfort and safety of your own home. The Ioniq 9 is also quiet and its interior still features a few knobs and buttons for ease of use. Disadvantages include the advanced highway driver aids not meeting the standard set by GM's Super Cruise system. But then again, neither Chevy nor GMC offer a fully electric 3-row SUV like this Hyundai. Really, one of the biggest disadvantages with the 2027 Ioniq 9 is the existence of Hyundai's own Palisade Hybrid. The hybrid model has a 528-mile EPA-rated range, or about 200 miles more than the Ioniq 9. But if that doesn't sway you, know that the 2027 Ioniq 9 represents one of the smartest 3-row SUV choices around. Most Ioniq 9s have standard AWD. But the Ioniq 9 did debut for 2026 with a 215-hp single-motor base model. Above that, everything else has 303 hp or 422 hp. Either way, the 2027 Ioniq 9 can move like few 3-row SUVs you've probably driven. In MotorTrend testing, a 2026 Ioniq 9 S with the RWD 215-hp powertrain hit 60 mph in a perfectly respectable 7.8 seconds. An Ioniq 9 AWD in the Calligraphy Design trim accelerated from 0-60 mph in a much quicker 4.4 seconds. That's not as quick as some Rivians, but much swifter than almost every gas-powered 3-row SUV out there. If the 2027 Ioniq 9 matches the 2026 model's performance, every trim will have an EPA rating of at least 300 miles of driving range. The RWD base model is good for 335 miles of range, which is decent for an electric 3-row at around $60,000. The AWD models for 2026 came in at 320 miles with the standard 303-hp set-up and a still-decent 311 miles in the higher trims' 422-hp powertrain. For comparison, these numbers are above the 2026 Kia EV9, which is good for 280 to 305 miles of range in most trims. All of those numbers pale in comparison to the range you'll get in a gas 3-row SUV. Even the 2026 Palisade non-hybrid comes in at 380 miles. Although it lacks the convenience of plugging in at home, it can be refueled more quickly on a roadtrip. The 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 is a safe SUV; the nearly identical 2026 model was awarded a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the highest designation possible. For comparison, the EV9 and R1S both get the same award, but the Hyundai Palisade doesn't qualify for 2026 awards. In NHTSA safety testing, the Ioniq 9 gets a five-star overall rating (five is the highest possible rating). Like every Hyundai, the 2027 Ioniq 9 comes with tons of safety tech. Standard features include blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic braking, automatic emergency front braking, front and rear parking sensors, lane keeping assist, and a safe exit assist that can protect you from accidentally opening the door into an oncoming bicyclist. The Ioniq 9 is a big SUV, so we're glad that the middle SEL trim and up get a 360 camera. Other available safety tech includes a parking collision avoidance system, side parking sensors, and the latest version of Hyundai's smart parking assist.
