Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has withheld results in several constituencies, pending re-polling at selected polling stations. According to an official notification, results for GB-15 Diamer-1, GB-16 Diamer-2, GB-17 Diamer-3, GBA-13 Astore and 10 polling stations in GBA-8 Skardu will remain on hold until the fresh voting process is completed. The commission directed returning officers not to open postal ballots, begin vote counting or release official results until further instructions are issued. It said final constituency results would only be prepared after incorporating the outcome of the re-polling. Election authorities also warned that failure to comply with these instructions would amount to a violation of the election code of conduct. The GB Chief Election Commissioner stated that no constituency’s outcome would be declared before the completion of the re-polling exercise. The decision follows unrest at the Loshi Thak women’s polling station in GBA-15, where voting was cancelled after violence and security disturbances disrupted the polling process. Reports said clashes involving stone-pelting and gunfire created panic, preventing many voters from casting their ballots, although nearly 200 votes had already been polled. Polling staff were later evacuated under security arrangements, while the Election Commission announced that fresh voting at the affected station would take place on June 15, 2026, from 8 am to 5 pm without any break. The commission added that the returning officer for GBA-15 would personally oversee all arrangements for the re-polling to ensure a transparent, fair and lawful electoral process.
