ONTARIO – Canada is known for being a flexible destination for remote workers, but the country of over 40million suddenly tightened its stance on digital nomads, and new immigration rules now demand clear proof that all income comes from outside the country, effectively closing the door on any local financial ties. Authorities dramatically tightened entry and visa rules for digital nomads in a move that is already sending shockwaves through the global remote work community. Under newly issued guidelines, immigration officers are now required to strictly verify that every dollar of income earned by digital nomad applicants originates entirely from outside Canada. Canadian government abruptly imposed far stricter conditions for “digital nomads” entering the country, making what was once a relatively smooth entry process significantly more difficult. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released updated instructions on its website on 26 May 2026 under the heading “Temporary Residents, Digital Nomads.” Following this update, entering Canada without a work permit is no longer as simple or flexible as it previously was. Previously, digital nomads were able to enter Canada as ordinary visitors without submitting any special documentation, and were allowed to work remotely while staying in the country for up to six months. That system has now been sharply restricted. Under new rules, immigration officers must now confirm and prove that the applicant’s entire income is derived from a company, employer, or clients located outside Canada.
