We take the long way in an Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster. Chris Collard|Car and DriverRead the Full Story As you can imagine, it's hard to fit a week's worth of adventure into a half-dozen pages of print, so here are some photos and a few stories that didn't make the magazine from our experience in Baja California, Mexico, with the Slow Baja tour. If I were picking a spec particularly to spend a week off-road in Mexico, I couldn't have done better than a 2025 Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Trialmaster, which houses a reliable 3.0-liter BMW engine under its stylish square exterior, and offered me plenty of space for gear. The Slow Baja events are tailored to vintage vehicles, but the retro styling of the Ineos Grenadier gave it classic cred to fit in with the Jeeps, Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, and Scouts that usually come on the SB trips. Guest of honor Sal Fish speaks with ranch owner Raul Aguiar, probably about some time when Fish kicked Aguiar out of the Baja 1000 race. That came up often with Fish. "I kicked my own partner (Mickey Thompson) out of the race," he told me. "More than once!" The Grenadier earned its keep, working as a mobile stage for Slow Baja organizer Michael Emery and the real brains behind the trip, Frank the dachshund. All that dog food isn't just for Frank. We had a planned stop at an animal rescue along the route. I know, you're used to seeing glamorous shots of overlanding built-ins, but if the goal is just to get out of scorpion range, a cheapie tent can squeeze right in the truck bed and costs a lot less. I would not recommend this on a windy night. Chuck Mills leads the group through the scrub along the Baja coast. Unlike several of my fellow excursionists, I had a working gas gauge and got double-digit mileage. With Fish as my co-driver, I got a personalized tour of Baja. At every stop he had a story about a race mishap or trials and tribulations in convincing land owners to let the race pass through. My favorite stories were from his early experiences planning the routes decades before cellphones or GPS, when he'd just head off in a generally southern direction and see where the road led. During the early introductions, it felt like everyone was named Mark, and I'm pretty sure that's one of the Marks. During the course of the drive, the Ineos gained cargo that was proving inconvenient for some of the smaller rigs. By the time we got to the Baja Animal Outreach, I had all the dog food donations, plus our group cooler, and several additional camp chairs. Maysie Jukes, falling in love. Okay, this is how I always feel when I'm off-road, but normally photos just show me hunched anxiously over the wheel, peering at the front of the hood like a nearsighted lemur who has somehow found herself in charge of a truck. But this? Glorious. Although I did let a lot of dust in through the pop-up window. The slight elevation of the campsite put us eye level with the pelicans flying by. Sal Fish, telling me this particular section of coastline was new to him. "We never came out here with the race," he said. "Why not?" I asked, because I'm a dummy. He paused. "It's a dead end," he said. "In the ocean." If there's a better feeling than watching the sunset with new friends and their rescued puppy, I don't know what it is.
