LAHORE – Punjab government announced Rs2 million in compensation for family of each child killed in devastating roof collapse at tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area, as authorities launched a sweeping crackdown on illegal tuition centres operating across the metropolis. Punjab Chief Minister’s Adviser Zeeshan Malik said the parents of each of the 14 children who lost their lives in the tragedy would receive Rs2 million, while every injured victim would be provided Rs500,000 in financial assistance. The deadly incident occurred when the roof of tuition centre being run from residential house suddenly caved in, trapping dozens of children beneath the rubble. The collapse killed 14 children and left eight students and the centre’s owner and teacher, Aneela, injured. The injured were rushed to Kahna Hospital, while Aneela was later shifted to Lahore General Hospital for further treatment. Aneela said she had been running the tuition centre for the past two years to help support her family through difficult financial circumstances. She explained that her husband earns a living by operating a roadside cart near a local market, while the tuition centre provided an additional source of income for the household. According to Aneela, the centre had around 30 to 35 enrolled students, with 20 to 22 children attending class when the roof collapsed. The injured teacher revealed that recent monsoon rains had caused persistent water leakage from the roof, prompting repair work to begin. However, she said she never expected the structure to collapse without warning. Aneela also disclosed that her own daughter was among those injured in the disaster. Although the child has recovered and been discharged from hospital, Aneela has not yet been able to see her because she remains under medical care.
