Pakistan-China: A bond beyond time and change

THE relationship between Pakistan and China is not a conventional diplomatic arrangement between two states. It is better understood as an evolving continuum of mutual respect, trust, and quiet support that has endured through shifting global circumstances. Often described in poetic terms as “higher than mountains, deeper than oceans, and sweeter than honey,” its real significance lies not in symbolism but in a practical, historically grounded partnership that has developed steadily over more than seven decades. What makes this relationship distinctive is its consistency. In an international system where alliances often shift with changing interests, Pak-China partnership has remained remarkably stable. It has not only survived global political transitions but has strengthened through them, anchored in principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual respect. The foundation of this friendship was laid soon after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. At a time when many countries hesitated to engage with the new Chinese state, Pakistan took a decisive step by recognising China in 1950 and establishing diplomatic relations in 1951. This early decision was not driven by immediate strategic gain but by a forward-looking understanding that meaningful international relationships are built through engagement rather than isolation. It set the tone for a partnership based on confidence and long-term trust. Over time, this goodwill developed into strong political cooperation. Both countries have consistently supported each other on core national issues in international forums. Pakistan upheld the One China policy, while China supported Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This mutual backing became a defining feature of their relationship, distinguishing it from many other partnerships that fluctuate under geopolitical pressure. Even during regional tensions, this diplomatic alignment has remained steady. The strategic dimension became more
