Rubio Says Lebanon Ceasefire Talks Separate From Iran Deal
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that efforts to negotiate and sustain a ceasefire in Lebanon will remain independent of any broader agreement involving Iran. Speaking to reporters after arriving in Abu Dhabi, Rubio stressed that Lebanon’s internal affairs would be handled directly with the Lebanese government rather than being tied to ongoing discussions with Tehran. Rubio emphasised that Lebanon is a sovereign state with its own elected government, adding that the US intends to engage directly with Lebanese authorities regarding the country’s future. He noted, however, that Iran’s backing of Hezbollah remains a separate issue and will be part of wider discussions with Tehran. Addressing regional maritime security, Rubio said the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to ensure safe and unrestricted international shipping. He underlined that, under international law, no country has the authority to impose tolls or fees on vessels using the globally significant waterway. Rubio arrived in Abu Dhabi as the first stop of his Gulf tour, where he is scheduled to meet senior United Arab Emirates officials before continuing to Kuwait and Bahrain for a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting on Wednesday.
