2027 BMW X7

The three-row X7 stands at the top of BMW’s SUV lineup. It provides the most interior space of any BMW and also demonstrates the automaker’s approach to range-topping technology and luxury features. The X7 was introduced for 2019 and received a refresh for 2023. It’s expected to carry over unchanged into 2027, before a next-generation model potentially arrives for 2028. Luxury three-row SUV rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Lincoln Navigator, and Rivian R1S. Don’t expect major changes to the X7 for 2027—but an all-new generation could arrive for 2028. For 2027, BMW is focusing on the iX3 EV and new X5 as its major SUV efforts. Because of that, the automaker will likely wait to put its attention on the future X7. Despite being BMW’s largest SUV, the X7 still delivers the athletic character fans of the brand expect. For something this big, the X7 feels remarkably nimble and enjoyable to drive. With how surprisingly capable and fuel-efficient the base I-6 engine is, upgrading to the available V-8 seems superfluous. Even so, that V-8 is excellent, with effortless acceleration and a great sound. Every X7 gets a richly appointed cabin, and BMW makes it a tech showcase with expansive displays and advanced connectivity. The tradeoff is a reliance on touchscreen controls for simple adjustments. The voice assistant can streamline many common tasks, but BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles already demonstrate next-gen features the X7 lacks. Another drawback is the third row. Rival three-row SUVs have far-back seats that are larger and easier to access. Treat the X7 as a two-row SUV with a backup third row, and it makes a lot more sense. The X7 has had a good run in its first generation. Count on BMW to refine the formula when the second-generation model arrives, potentially for 2028. Every X7 uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. In the xDrive40i, a turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 engine produces 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Even though this is the base engine, it got the X7 from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds in MotorTrend testing. The M60i variant has a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 making 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That provides a 0–60-mph launch of about 4.2 seconds. BMW has never offered a true X7M, but the Alpina XB7 filled a similar high-performance role. Instead of going hard-edged like some BMW M models, Alpina’s approach blends speed with luxury. In the XB7, the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 produced 631 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0–60-mph run of 4.0 seconds. Even as Alpina becomes a more integral part of BMW, the XB7 was discontinued after 2026. It could return when the next-generation X7 arrives for 2028. Fuel economy for the 2027 X7 xDrive40i should come in at about 21/25 mpg city/highway. In the M60i, those figures are 16/20 mpg. Driving range on a full tank of gas is 504 miles and 394 miles, respectively. The X7 includes front automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane change assist, and hands-free highway driving functionality. There’s not as much space inside the X7 as in some of its rivals. Then again, other three-row SUVs tend to be larger. Cargo Space (behind third/second/first rows) The X7 is rated to tow up to 7,500 pounds with the factory-installed trailer hitch. Every X7 is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both contained within a single curved panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with built-in navigation. Phone-as-key functionality is also included. In addition to USB ports, there’s a wireless charging pad in the front row. Above the base setup, BMW offers the X7 with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system or 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system. The X7 can be equipped with a head-up display and extended interior ambient lighting as options. Expect pricing for the 2027 X7 xDrive40i to start at about $90,000. Standard exterior features include 21-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, and power-operated tailgate. The SUV rides on air suspension.
