Will Pakistan have a five or six-day break for Eid ul-Azha 2026?
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
ISLAMABAD – With the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirming the sighting of the Zilhaj moon, people have begun planning for the upcoming Eidul Azha 2026 holidays. A day earlier, committee Chairperson Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad announced that the Zilhaj moon had been sighted and Eidul Azha will be celebrated on May 27. Addressing a press conference, he said it has been unanimously decided that first Zilhaj 1447 AH will be on May 18 (Monday). Earlier this week, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) had predicted that Eidul Azha was expected to fall on May 27 as the “new moon of Zilhajj 1447 AH is expected to be born on May 17 at 1:01am”. Eidul Azha 2026 Holidays According to the official public holiday calendar, the Eidul Azha break is scheduled from May 27 to May 29 (Wednesday to Friday). Combined with the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), this would make it a five-day holiday. However, it is anticipated that the Eid holidays may start a day earlier, from May 26, allowing people extra time to travel to their hometowns and celebrate with family. If this adjustment is made, the break would extend to six days. The final decision rests with the federal government, and the public awaits the official notification.
