Pakistan’s strategic comeback on global stage

THE global order is undergoing a deep transformation. Power is no longer concentrated in a single centre but is now distributed among multiple regional and global actors. In this evolving environment, Pakistan is gradually re-emerging as a strategically important state with growing diplomatic relevance. This shift is not accidental. It reflects sustained diplomatic engagement, geographic advantage, security cooperation and a pragmatic foreign policy that seeks balance rather than alignment with any single bloc. Pakistan’s ability to maintain working relations with major powers such as the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Türkiye, Qatar and Egypt highlights its unique diplomatic positioning. From a research-based international relations perspective, countries located at critical geographic junctions and practicing multi-vector diplomacy often function as “bridge states.” These states connect competing powers, facilitate dialogue and help reduce regional tensions. Pakistan fits this model due to its location at the crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Arabian Sea. Historically, Pakistan’s strategic importance has been acknowledged in multiple phases of global politics, from the Cold War era to the post-9/11 security environment and now in the emerging multipolar world. However, the current phase is different. Pakistan is increasingly being viewed not only as a security partner but also as a potential economic and diplomatic connector. A key element of this strategic comeback is Pakistan’s role in regional connectivity initiatives. Projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have strengthened Pakistan’s position as a potential trade and energy corridor linking East Asia with the Middle East and Central Asia. At the same time, Pakistan’s consistent support for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes has reinforced its image as a responsible regional actor. Pakistan has also played a constructive role in maintaini
