The biggest summer holiday in America is extra special this year, as this Fourth of July marks the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This means it is essentially a huge milestone birthday for the nation. Since the big day falls on a Saturday this year, many organizations will observe it on Friday, July 3. What is open and closed under these circumstances can be confusing, so read on to find out where to grab some last-minute sunscreen. What exactly does the Fourth of July celebrate? The Fourth of July celebrates the day the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. This document, written by Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed that the 13 American colonies were no longer under the thumb of Great Britain. King George III was not thrilled, and tried to dismiss the document as an act of rebellion. Despite this, other governments, including those of France, Spain, and the Netherlands, would recognize American independence. Is July 3 a federal holiday? The Fourth of July is the federal holiday. When this falls on a weekend, it is observed on July 3 by the federal government. Are banks and ATMs open on July 3? Yes. Most banks will remain open on July 3, and will observe the holiday on the Fourth. (However, it is always a good practice to check ahead so you don’t waste any time.)
