Quetta Acid Attack: Female doctor now in stable condition

A female doctor who was injured in an acid attack at a hospital in Quetta is reported to be in stable condition and is currently undergoing treatment at a private medical facility in Karachi. The victim, Dr Mahnoor Nasir, was airlifted to Karachi after suffering serious injuries during the attack at Sandeman Provincial Hospital in Quetta. Teams of reconstructive surgeons and eye specialists have completed an initial evaluation of the victim. She sustained burns on her face, abdomen, legs and right hand and has been moved to a Special Care Unit for further treatment. Around 13 per cent of her body was affected by burns. Although the acid also impacted her eyes, doctors confirmed that her vision remains safe and she is no longer in critical danger. After arriving at the private hospital located on Karachi’s University Road, Dr Nasir underwent preliminary medical examinations and diagnostic tests. Doctors described her condition as satisfactory and said another assessment would be conducted after the next 24 hours. Hospital officials added that the doctor would remain under close medical supervision for at least 10 days, including an initial stay of two days in the ICU. Meanwhile, police in Quetta registered a case over the acid attack at the Civil Lines police station. The FIR was lodged against suspect Humayun Shah under Section 336-B. Police officials said the suspect was later killed in an exchange of fire while authorities were attempting to arrest him. Balochistan Health Minister Bakht Kakar stated that the suspect had been harassing the doctor for several months. He claimed investigators found evidence of harassment in messages retrieved from the suspect’s mobile phone. Kakar said that although burn treatment facilities were available in Balochistan, the victim was shifted to Karachi on the request of her family.
