Russia offers to take custody of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile

Pakistan Observer · May 10, 2026, 9:49 AM

Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow is willing to transport and take custody of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium. During a press briefing in Moscow, he recalled that Russia had previously removed enriched uranium from Iran in 2015 and said the country was ready to carry out a similar arrangement again. Putin stated that all sides involved had initially supported the plan to transfer the uranium out of Iran. However, according to Putin, the process stalled after the United States insisted that the material be sent only to American territory, prompting Iran to toughen its stance in response. Putin stated that Russia would continue discussions with both Washington and Tehran, expressing hope that tensions between the parties would be resolved soon. Iran has so far not issued an official response to the Russian president’s statement. Iran warns US sanction-enforcing states of Hormuz obstacles
