It's the closest thing to a Mercedes-AMG-built Mustang. Doing a muscle car the AMG way in this case means there's no V-8 rumble; the CLE53 is powered by a turbocharged inline six. It's plenty punchy, though, able to rocket the two-door to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds at our test track. Handling is sharp, too, giving the CLE53 a fun-loving attitude. Coupe and convertible models are offered, and both are fitted out with a host of luxury features inside that help justify the price premium over rivals from BMW and Cadillac. Expert Tip: If you're someone who needs four doors, the Mercedes-AMG E53 sports sedan offers more space and practicality, but its starting price is much higher. There are no significant changes to the CLE53 for the 2027 model year. The CLE53 is offered in Exclusive and Pinnacle trims, and we think going with the Pinnacle is worth the spend. It adds a head-up display, an augmented-reality navigation system, upgraded headlamps, and access to more third-party apps via the MBUX infotainment system. Like the Benz-branded CLE450, the CLE53 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that's assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system. But here, this powertrain is tuned up from 375 horsepower to 443 with an increase in turbo boost pressure and reworked engine internals. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are both standard. AMG has also massaged the CLE's adaptive suspension system, giving it a more performance-oriented setup with increasingly aggressive tunes preset for the Sport and Sport+ driving modes. On our recent test drive, we noted the CLE53's firm ride, as you'd expect from an AMG model, but cruising in Comfort mode softened things a bit. The CLE53's responsive steering and sharp handling are dialed in for discerning enthusiast drivers. In Comparison: Despite being down on power over the 472-hp Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, the CLE53 outran that car to 60 mph, completing that test 0.5 seconds quicker— thanks in part to the extra traction enabled by its all-wheel drive system. With a potent turbocharged inline-six and standard all-wheel drive, one might expect the CLE53 coupe and convertible to have not-so-great fuel economy. That’s largely true. The hard top version gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. Choosing the convertible reduces all three ratings by 1 mpg. That puts the CLE53 behind its primary competition, including the Audi S5 and BMW M440i. First Row: Inside, the CLE53 follows the standard CLE-class's layout, with two roomy front seats and a less spacious back row with seats for two more riders. The AMG model takes on a racier aesthetic, though, with carbon-fiber trim, microfiber upholstery, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and red stitching. Nappa leather upholstery is optional, as is an AMG Performance Seat package, which swaps in more aggressively bolstered bucket seats in the front. To help keep wind buffeting in the convertible to a minimum, it features a power-operated wind deflector that rises behind the rear seat headrests; a pair of neck warmers is also incorporated into the front seats for when exterior temps get chilly, but you want to keep the top down anyway. Second Row: It being a two-door, the CLE53's rear seat space is predictably cramped. A pair of adults will be able to squeeze in for short trips, but long road trips should be planned only for a driver and front passenger. Cargo Capacity: The coupe has a 14.8 cubic-foot trunk. The CLE53 Cabriolet's trunk shrinks from 14.0 cubic feet to 10 cubic feet when the top is down (as the fabric top partially fills the space). In our testing, we fit five carry-on suitcases inside the coupe's trunk, and with the rear seats folded, we fit 13. An 11.9-inch infotainment display stretches from the center console up to a pod of three air vents atop the dashboard, giving Mercedes's latest MBUX software center stage. A separate 12.3-inch display is nestled ahead of the steering wheel, containing the CLE53’s digital gauges. You can use the touchscreen to interact with the infotainment system, or you can use touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel to do the same.
