Inside the flat in Gordon Park, a leafy northern Brisbane suburb, the television thundered without an audience. Light flooded every room, bleaching the space in a glare that felt hostile for the hour. The clock had just ticked over 10:15pm on Tuesday, August 16, 1977, when chemist Philip Aldridge, 21, returned from university lectures to the home he shared with Dawn Hillier, his 17-year-old girlfriend. They had moved in together only three weeks earlier — crossing the invisible line between youthful romance and the beginnings of a shared life. He moved down the hallway toward the bedroom, each step carrying him closer to a scene of almost incomprehensible brutality that would split his life into before and after. Dawn's near-naked, mutilated body was sprawled across the double bed. She wore only a blouse, a broken brassiere and long, woollen socks. (Supplied: Jack Sim) She'd been sexually assaulted, strangled and stabbed in the neck, abdomen and groin with a 36-centimetre carving knife, sourced from her own kitchen. For all its brutality, the crime carried an eerie composure. The bloodied weapon was returned to its spot with chilling normalcy, before the offender slipped unnoticed into darkness. Queensland crime historian Jack Sim said the savagery of the attack "stunned" the most seasoned officers. "It shocked the hell out of Brisbane," he said. (Supplied: Jack Sim) For months, police poured every available resource into the investigation — it was, for a time, the defining unsolved murder in the city. Nearly five decades on, despite a $250,000 reward, the killer remains a phantom who has evaded generations of detectives. The passage of time, advances in forensic science and repeated public appeals have so far failed to deliver the breakthrough needed to crack the case wide open. Born in the United Kingdom in 1960, Dawn Elaine Hillier spent her early childhood in England before emigrating to Australia with her family when she was 10-years-old. Her mother, Patricia Hillier, once described her daughter, who had ginger hair and wore glasses, as a "ray of sunshine." (Supplied: Jack Sim) "We called her 'Twinkle' or 'Twink' because she was just such a bright personality," Ms Hillier told journalists in 1977. Mr Sim says Dawn was known by friends and colleagues as a "very sweet" young woman with "no known enemies." "This is not a person who is associating with violent people or in the criminal world in any way," he said. "In the 1970s, young people are finding their feet, their independence and their sexuality and they're exploring and enjoying life [while] other generations were a lot more reserved." (Supplied: Jack Sim) "That exploration extended to relationships — they were pushing back against traditions of the 60s … that you certainly wouldn't move out with someone until you were married. Young people were pushing back against that and Dawn was one of them," he said. She worked as a secretary at Pine Rivers Council and met Philip through the Pine Rivers Young Liberals branch. He was the manager; she was secretary. "And once they did meet, that was it," her mother, Patricia Hillier, said. "This was a love affair of the finest kind and it had our blessing," she said, adding that the couple "intended to marry". The night before Dawn's murder, she and Philip spent the evening at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), blissfully unaware they were living through the final hours of their time together. About 30 detectives were assigned to the case, pursuing every tip-off relentlessly, door-knocking hundreds of homes and questioning residents and shopkeepers.
