Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
LAHORE – The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council has announced its forecast for the beginning of Muharram 1448 in Pakistan. According to the Council’s Secretary General, Khalid Ijaz Mufti, the new moon will be born on June 15, 2026, at 7:54 AM Pakistani time. However, at sunset on the same day, the moon’s age across all regions of Pakistan will be less than 12 hours. Typically, the moon is considered sightable when it is at least 18 hours old. Based on this, the Council has projected that the first day of Muharram in Pakistan is likely to fall on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. This announcement provides guidance for religious observances and preparations for the Islamic New Year. During the Islamic month of Muharram, Youm-e-Ashur is observed across the country with due solemnity to pay homage to the supreme sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain and his devoted companions in Karbala. Taazia and Zuljanah processions are taken out in all cities and towns of the country today in memory of martyrs of Karbala. Ulema and Zakireen highlight the bright and candid teachings of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.) and various aspects of Karbala tragedy.
