IRGC Says Response to Any US Ceasefire Violation ‘Certain’

Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that retaliation against any violation of the ceasefire by the US military was a “legitimate and certain” right. The IRGC’s warning came after US Central Command announced that it had carried out defensive strikes in southern Iran last night. Without directly referring to those attacks, the IRGC media wing stated that the US military, “continuing its interventionist adventurism and aggressive behaviour in the region, entered Iranian airspace in the Persian Gulf area”. After which, IRGC defence units, “following careful intelligence monitoring, identified and shot down an MQ-9 drone.” The IRGC further stated that it had also fired at an RQ-4 drone and an F-35 fighter jet, “forcing them to retreat and leave regional waters.” The Guards did not specify the time or location of these incidents. Earlier, the US military announced that it had launched new strikes in southern Iran overnight, targeting Iranian missile sites and boats that were “attempting to lay naval mines.” According to the US Central Command statement, the attacks were carried out in self-defence and aimed at “protecting US forces from threats posed by Iranian forces.” Iranian media reported last night that explosion sounds were heard around Bandar Abbas and the city’s airport. Oil prices, which had fallen significantly following hopes of successful negotiations between Iran and the United States, have started rising again. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after the new attacks on Iran that an agreement between the two countries was still possible.
