Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is expected to observe two consecutive public holidays during the ongoing month of June 2026 as the country prepares for the beginning of holy month of Muharram-ul-Haram. The final dates of the public holidays will depend on the official moon-sighting announcement. According to preliminary astronomical estimates, Youm-e-Ashura, observed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, is expected to fall on June 25 and 26, 2026. The federal government has already designated the two days as public holidays, subject to confirmation of the Muharram moon. The final decision regarding the start of the Islamic month will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after reviewing moon-sighting reports. An official notification regarding the holidays is expected once the moon is sighted and the dates are confirmed. According to SUPARCO, the chances of sighting the Muharram moon on June 15 are extremely low, making it likely that Zil Hajj will complete 30 days. Based on these projections, 1 Muharram is expected to fall on June 17. If the new Islamic year begins on June 17, Youm-e-Ashura is likely to be observed on Friday, June 26. During the annual Ashura holidays, government offices, educational institutions, banks and many private sector workplaces typically remain closed across the country.
