KP Reports Two New Polio Cases, Pakistan Tally Hits Three
Why this matters: local context for readers following news across Pakistan and the region.
Two fresh cases of Polio have been detected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the National Institute of Health confirmed on Friday. Health officials said the new infections were reported from Bannu and North Waziristan, involving a five-month-old baby and a two-year-old girl. The first case of the year had earlier emerged in Sujawal. The National Emergency Operations Centre announced that a targeted anti-polio campaign will be rolled out in selected districts later this month, aiming to vaccinate nearly 19 million children. Pakistan recorded 31 cases in 2025, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the worst-hit region, followed by Sindh, while isolated cases were reported in Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan. Polio remains a highly infectious disease that can lead to permanent paralysis or death, though it is preventable through safe and widely used vaccines. Authorities have urged parents to ensure children receive all doses during campaigns, while communities, religious leaders, and media are encouraged to support vaccination efforts and counter misinformation to help eliminate the disease.
