CARACAS – The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen to 235, while more than 4,300 people have been injured and thousands remain missing, as rescue efforts continue across affected areas. Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck within a short interval late Wednesday and Thursday, causing widespread destruction in and around the capital Caracas and coastal regions. The city of La Guaira was among the worst-hit areas, where several high-rise buildings collapsed within moments. Severe damage was also reported in Caracas and other locations, with roads, buildings, electricity poles, and trees affected by the powerful tremors. Emergency services are continuing search and rescue operations as reports indicate that many people remain trapped beneath debris. Authorities have declared an emergency, while educational activities and train services have been suspended. The country’s main airport was also closed due to damage. The earthquake’s epicentre was located around 284 kilometres east of Caracas. The tremors were also felt in neighbouring regions, including parts of Colombia, California in the United States, Caribbean islands, and Japan. International support has started arriving as countries, global organisations, and humanitarian groups send financial assistance, rescue teams, and emergency supplies to affected areas. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said coordinated efforts were underway to deploy international search and rescue teams, adding that large-scale global cooperation would be needed for recovery and rehabilitation. The United States announced $150 million in humanitarian assistance for Venezuela, including funds for the UN World Food Programme and other aid organisations, while the Vatican allocated €100,000 in emergency support. World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés also announced food assistance for earthquake victims in Caracas and pledged an additional $1 million in aid.
