KARACHI – Humid weather and partly cloudy skies are expected to prevail in Karachi over the next 24 hours, with light drizzle likely at isolated locations during the morning and night, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday. The Met Office predicted that the maximum temperature in the city is expected to range between 34°C and 36°C, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 29°C. Humidity was measured at 78 percent, with sea winds blowing at a speed of around 15 kilometres per hour. Meanwhile, hot and dry weather is expected to continue in Peshawar, where the maximum temperature is likely to reach 41°C. The city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 26°C, while humidity stood at 43 percent. The PMD has forecast rain in most upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the next 24 hours, whereas the province’s plain areas are expected to experience hot weather. The weather department has also warned that above-normal temperatures are likely to persist across many parts of the country during June. Southern regions, including eastern Balochistan, western Sindh and central Punjab, are expected to experience higher-than-average temperatures, increasing the possibility of heatwave conditions. Meteorological data showed that Sindh received only 0.3 millimetres of rainfall in May, significantly below its long-term average of 3.1 millimetres. The province’s average temperature during the month was recorded at 35.2°C, about one degree Celsius above normal. For June, the PMD expects near-normal to slightly below-normal rainfall across the country. While southern regions are likely to receive rainfall close to seasonal averages, precipitation may vary from one area to another. The department also cautioned that despite below-normal rainfall, isolated heavy downpours during the monsoon season could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of major cities.
