Thousands march in South Africa demanding illegal migrants leave
Why this matters: an international story with cross-border implications worth tracking.
Tens of thousands of people marched on June 30th South Africa's largest cities, following a call from around 20 organisations demanding that South Africa tighten its immigration policy. The day was largely peaceful, despite a few arrests for attempted looting. Clashes between South Africans and immigrants have left at least four people dead in recent weeks. More than 25,000 undocumented migrants have already left the country following these events, said the police. Police remain on high alert for the rest of the evening. Reporting by Caroline Dumay, Stefan Carstens and Eunice Masson in the streets of Cape Town.
